Jihuu · Detailed service information

The details, in plain language.

Jihuu combines Finnish public data into one place search. This page explains what the service records, where its information comes from, what it can and cannot promise, and how to contact us.

01 · Privacy

A search is not an advertising profile.

Jihuu has no user accounts, advertising trackers, third-party analytics, or cross-search session identifier. We collect a deliberately small first-party dataset to operate, protect, and improve the search.

No tracking cookies Language and light/dark theme are stored only as browser preferences.
30 days of raw telemetry Then the search, result snapshot, and related UI events are deleted.
No IP in analytics Network identifiers used for rate limiting are not attached to searches.

Controller and purpose

Sunai.fi is the service operator and controller for Jihuu's first-party telemetry. Contact contact@sunai.fi about privacy or your data.

We process the minimum data needed to return a search, understand whether results are useful, diagnose reliability problems, and prevent abuse. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating, securing, and improving this privacy-preserving public service. There is no automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects.

What a search records

After a successful search, the service stores the normalized query, interface language, response time, result counts, and a bounded snapshot of the public result identities, titles, sections, and ranking. A random identifier links only the telemetry of that one search and is not reused for later searches.

Fixed UI events can record that results rendered, a result or map control was selected, an address was copied, more results were requested, or an outbound HSL, map, company, or Wikipedia link was opened. We do not record scrolling, pointer movement, map panning, dwell time, arbitrary browser metadata, or the replacement query in a reformulation event. We do not sell search or telemetry data.

In-memory rate-limit key 10 minutes after last use

Full IPv4 address or IPv6 /64 network; never persisted by Jihuu.

Hosting HTTP logs Currently 7 days

Hosting-provider-controlled request path, source IP, and user-agent logs.

Raw first-party telemetry 30 complete UTC days

Searches, bounded result snapshots, and allowlisted UI events.

Anonymous daily aggregates 760 days

Counts and product/reliability summaries without queries or identifiers.

Browser storage and URLs

Jihuu does not set cookies. Your browser may store the selected interface language and colour theme in local storage. The current search is placed in the page URL so it can survive a refresh; it can therefore appear in your browser history or a copied link. Avoid entering unnecessary sensitive or personal information into the search field.

Hosting and outside services

The application and database run in an EU data centre in the Amsterdam region. A production check confirmed that the hosting HTTP log's request-path field omits the search query string; this is rechecked after material platform changes. HSL requests are made server-side with a resolved coordinate, not the raw query. OpenFreeMap assets pass through Jihuu's same-origin relay, which does not forward your IP, cookies, user agent, origin, or referrer upstream.

Wikipedia article data is fetched server-side from a resolved place context. A displayed Wikimedia thumbnail is loaded by your browser directly from Wikimedia, so Wikimedia receives the normal connection information such as your IP address. External map, journey-planner, company, and article sites are contacted only when you open their links and apply their own privacy terms.

The "Web" results category is the one exception to sending only resolved identifiers to an outside service: your search text itself is sent server-side to the Brave Search API to find matching web pages. This request is server-to-server only — Brave receives Jihuu's server connection, never your IP address, cookies, or browser information. Wikipedia pages are excluded from this category because Jihuu already queries Wikipedia directly, above. Unlike the Wikimedia thumbnail described above, any thumbnail shown on a web result is also fetched server-side and relayed from Jihuu — your browser never contacts Brave directly for these either.

The "Show me on the map" button is entirely optional and off by default: normal search works exactly the same whether or not you ever use it. If you tap it, your browser asks you directly for permission to share your location — Jihuu never requests it silently, and denying it just means normal search keeps working as usual. If you allow it, your device's coordinate is sent to Jihuu's server once, used immediately to look up nearby addresses, businesses, and HSL stops from the same local data normal search already uses, and then discarded — the coordinate itself is never written to a database, a log file, or any analytics event, even temporarily. Unlike the "Web" results above, this request never leaves Jihuu's own server at all: no external service ever receives your location. And because Jihuu has no accounts, there is nothing to tie a located position to a returning visitor — each use is independent.

The microphone button is entirely optional and off by default: normal search works exactly the same whether or not you ever use it. If you tap it, your browser asks you directly for permission to use your microphone — Jihuu never requests it silently, and denying it just means normal search keeps working as usual. If you allow it, a short clip (five to ten seconds) is recorded and sent server-to-server, once, to ElevenLabs' speech-to-text service to be turned into text; Jihuu never stores, logs, or writes the recording to any database, log file, or analytics event, even temporarily, and the resulting text is only used to run the same fuzzy search as if you had typed it. This is the one exception where your own raw input reaches an outside service the way the "Web" results above do: unlike the "Show me on the map" case, this request does leave Jihuu's server. We are not able to fully guarantee what ElevenLabs itself does with the audio afterwards — their default setting retains request data for service operation, and disabling that retention entirely is only offered on enterprise plans Jihuu does not currently use. We are telling you this plainly rather than implying a guarantee we cannot make; if that trade-off does not sit right with you, typing your search works exactly as well.

Your choices and rights

You may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or object to processing by emailing contact@sunai.fi. Because Jihuu intentionally has no account or persistent user identifier, we may be unable to identify a particular telemetry row without information that reliably locates it; we will not collect extra identity data merely to do so. You may also contact the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman ↗.

02 · Data sources

Imported facts first, live context second.

Core fuzzy search uses local, imported datasets and keeps working if an external connector is unavailable. Live sources enrich a resolved result. Source providers do not endorse Jihuu and remain responsible for their own data.

Provenance work still open

The exact original URL, retrieval timestamp, checksum, and licence record were not retained with the current externally supplied Syke address snapshot or the existing NLS place-name chunks. Their providers publish these products as open data, but Jihuu will capture complete machine-readable manifests before either source is refreshed. The ODbL obligations for distributing a derived OSM database also remain under explicit review. This does not affect the on-page OSM attribution and licence link.

Jihuu normalizes and ranks the sources above, but does not remove their licences, ownership, or attribution requirements. Links labelled with ↗ lead to another service or source with its own terms.

03 · Accessibility

Useful without perfect vision, motion, or precision.

Jihuu targets WCAG 2.2 level AA. This is a current accessibility statement, not a claim of certification; the service has not yet received an independent accessibility audit.

KeyboardSearch, language, theme, result actions, and links can be reached without a pointer.
StructureSemantic headings, regions, labels, live status text, and visible focus support assistive technology.
AppearanceResponsive layouts, light/dark themes, strong contrast, and browser zoom are supported.
MotionDecorative animation stops when the browser requests reduced motion.
LanguageThe interface and this statement are available in Finnish and English; source content may retain its original language.
Text alternativeAddresses, place descriptions, transit stops, and external map links remain available alongside the visual map.

Known limitation

The interactive canvas map does not expose every road, shape, and spatial relationship to a screen reader. Use the adjacent textual result, address, transit information, and external map link as alternatives. Some Wikipedia media may also have incomplete alternative text inherited from its source.

Assessment and feedback

The statement is based on internal keyboard, responsive-layout, contrast, reduced-motion, hardened-browser, and automated regression checks. If a part of the service is difficult to use, email contact@sunai.fi with the page, device, browser or assistive technology, and a short description. Do not include a sensitive search query unless it is necessary to reproduce the problem.

04 · Terms, limits & contact

A helpful index—not an official decision.

Jihuu is an informational search service. Use it as a starting point and verify important facts with the responsible authority or source.

Service limitations

  • Source coverage, accuracy, names, coordinates, opening details, and freshness vary.
  • A place pin can be a representative point—not an entrance, safe route, property boundary, or access permission.
  • Departure predictions and external context can be delayed or unavailable.
  • Do not use Jihuu for emergencies, legal or property decisions, official notices, or safety-critical navigation.

Fair use

Normal personal and professional search use is welcome. Do not bypass rate limits, probe other users, disrupt the service, inject harmful traffic, or perform high-volume automated extraction through the public UI/API. Use the original open-data sources for bulk reuse. Access may be limited to protect the service and its upstream providers.
